For LA Fashion Week (er, Fashion Month) Jazzi McGilbert will be hitting the shows and making some west coast stye pit stops along the way.
In NY we’ve seen a number of designers trade in the usual runway format for more intimate presentations and, given the fashion scene here is on a much smaller scale, makes sense that LA would follow suit. So far, the number of presentations in LA seem to be outnumbering actual runway shows, but the flexibility to come and go at leisure has been perfect since runway shows here (or anywhere) rarely start on time. It’s also been a great way to get a closer look at all the details that can be missed on a model stomping by.
Designer Lizz Wasserman staged an installation at the historic downtown Los Angeles Theater for her sustainable line Popomomo (a definite mouthful, that stands for “post-postmodern movement”). The seats were formed in a circle, and instead of having the models stand like statues, Lizz kept things interesting by having the girls mill about the stage where they tied colored ribbon to wooden planks, stopping center-stage to sit on a bench or pose for pictures, showing off every exposed zipper, snap and tie to perfection. The former Urban Outfitters and Free People designer proved that her hemp and organic cotton dresses were made to be lived in - in fact, many of the looks were wrinkled on purpose in a true testament to “effortless chic”
